Painted Canyon

Friends, this view is the first view that most visitors from the east see from the overlook along Interstate Highway 94.  This is called Painted Canyon and is part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota.  Some never see the rest of the park, but those who do, usually fall in love with the red hills, wild animals and great trails. In the days to follow, i will take you to some of my favorite places in the park, enjoy til Tomorrow MJcrop painted hdr

Weekly Challenge: Room

a view from the top

Friends, this is room to wander in the badlands of North Dakota, this rock has enough room to sit and watch the sunrise over the foggy hills.  It is a place near and dear to my heart, where my mother was raised and i wandered as a child visiting beloved grandparents.  The clouds are mares tails, reminding me of the wild horses who still roam the park (Theodore Roosevelt National Park).  This is the first of several posts from this region, enjoy til Tomorrow MJ

The Moon Also Rises

timelapse moonrise final

Friends, while taking this time lapse of clouds drifting through crex, i noticed that the moon was rising in this series of shots, i am exploring a time-stacking technique and got a lovely surprise.  This image is a result of stacking 12 images taken 1-2 minutes apart into a single image, i like this effect and will be doing more stacking in the near future, as soon as our 15 inches of new snow gets melted away. ugh! til Tomorrow MJ

Red Moon

red moon11

Friends, was up early this morning (2AM) to photograph a total lunar eclipse, it is called the blood moon, but i prefer the red moon.  I love that on this shot you can see the ice cap, pretty good for a 400 mm lens on a camera. This was a 3 second exposure on a tripod and a night with only a few clouds wisping through at times. til Tomorrow MJ

Balancing

blue balance3Friends, having a meltdown as our snow was starting to recede, but this morning we had 8 inches of fresh snow.  Between snow, cold and a non-functioning vehicle, i am very tired of this winter and anxious for it to be over.  On a recent trip to Lake Superior shores, ii found this ice chunk speaking of balance.  Balancing emotions like this ice chunk resting on a bigger ice chunk reminds me to trust in something bigger than myself, so today i am again back to the blogging.  til Tomorrow MJ

Waiting for Spring

snow house kestrelFriends, this image says winter and waiting for it to be over, the return of the bird to its house would definitely say spring, but first we have to melt these gigantic drifts.  This was found in the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area, a vast wilderness that only contains snowmobilers and rugged photographers in the winter.  Good thing we have four=wheel drive on the pickup, almost got stuck on a trail that had not been plowed very well, so if you go, watch the width of the road, if it narrows too much it has probably turned into a trail, not a road.  til Tomorrow MJ

A Hole in the Clouds

hole in the cloudFriends, on a recent cloudy day i ventured to enter Crex Meadows, no light but when i reached this point, suddenly the sky opened to reveal this lonely oak tree, so I took out the camera and took his picture, he said thank you and i was on my way, too much snow is making me talk to inanimate objects, but thank you lonely oak, til Tomorrow MJ

Snow Wave

snow waveFriends, well back to winter this morning, the wind makes beautiful snow waves and on a sunny morning they truly sparkle , enjoy your morning, til Tomorrow MJ

Around the Bend

pan along the roadFriends, working hard to process some images for a contest, found this scene in among my old images.  It was taken as an HDR capture and two images wide to incorporate the trees on the left and the whole island in the mid-foreground, lots of computer processing to get all the details in the dark areas on the left and the bright yellow areas in the middle. do you like??, til Tomorrow MJ

Lake Superior Icicles

Friends, last year the ice formations at Stoney Point were spectacular and these icicles formed at the bottom of every rock outcropping.  I like the contrast between the ice and rocks, need to hit the lake today and see what new treasures appear on the lake shore, til Tomorrow MJicicles lake superior
