The Neon Woods

neon woods2Friends, i get tired of the same old fall foliage images of pretty leaves and trees, so i was playing last night and came up with this.  An abstract with a painterly effect.  It is half a cup of motion blur, half a cup of paint spatter and a pinch of masking to reveal the details, is it a recipe worth keeping? that is the question til Tomorrow MJ

His Environment

begging grebe young grebeFriends, this baby pied billed grebe is begging food from his mom, and in the bottom image he is grown and no longer using the lily pads for cover.  Now he is swimming on the big water and getting his own food.  I love these little birds as they are always around on Phantom Lake, constantly fishing for food.  I am experimenting (again) with a crop that includes his water trail and his eye.  Do you like this kind of crop? til Tomorrow MJ

Fall at the Falls

upper falls amniconFriends, no I didn’t fall down, but yesterday was a lovely leaf-viewing day and again we went to Amnicon State Park to watch the rushing water of the Amnicon River.  I think this would make a great print, will try to print in the future, thanks JimE for the wonderful day, til Tomorrow MJ

Snake Pit Falls

snake pit fallsFriends, today we visit Snake Pit falls within the Amicon State Park.  This was a two-second exposure to blur the water yet keep the shady stones also with some detail.  I am experimenting with running water landscape photos.  A touch of fall in the leaves was also present. til Tomorrow MJ

Upper Falls

upper fallsFriends, again from Amicon SP these are part of the upper falls, now how lame is that name?, I think it should be called Erratic Falls for the two boulders that lie in the river bed, dropped by the mighty hand of a glacier, eons ago.  I think that the water in the back should be more silky looking, maybe i will work on that with photoshop.  The water is really red appearing as the sandstone underneath is red.  This was taken from a covered bridge that allows one to shoot from the middle of the river, a lower viewpoint would have put me in the middle of the next falls, danger. til Tomorrow MJ

At Amicon River

Friends, went looking for fall foliage yesterday and headed for the Amicon River in northern Wisconsin.  I love retirement when I can go to work in the northwoods, searching for running water and fall foliage on a warm day in October.  The only thing that would improve this would be to have a companion along in case i fall into the water.  But I am pretty careful when i am out alone and always find the pretty spots to photo.  I will be out again today. til Tomorrow MJsitting by the amicon

Northern Lights

big dipperFriends, this is my first attempt at photographing the northern lights, last night with Jim at the end of our road (Webster Wi).  I couldn’t resist including the big dipper in this shot, somehow made it more interesting.  The lights were not spectacular but just a warm glow on the horizon.  til Tomorrow MJ

Fall Storm

lighthouse storm2Friends, the Split Rock Lighthouse again, this time emphasizing the warm fall foliage at the shoreline.  I also liked the yellow lichen on the rocks in the foreground.  I am a great fan of lichen. This storm was an official gale warning and early in the season, as the gales of November are famous on Lake Superior  til Tomorrow MJ

Two Sides of Split Rock

lighthouse storm split rock stormFriends, the lighthouse on Split Rock is a very famous landmark of northern Minnesota.  Yesterday a storm blew 30-40 mph winds across Lake Superior, at times I could barely stand against this force.  But the wind did stir some magnificent waves and without the sun, the lake was very green.  The first image is from the south, and the second from the north, you can just see the top of the lighthouse peeking thru the trees.  The waves were crashing almost as high as the cliff.  Today the storm has passed into a peaceful rain.  til Tomorrow MJ

Milkweed 2

milkweed2Friends, I reexamined my milkweed images for the essence of the fall explosion of tiny white hairs that carry the seed on the breezes.  I like the essence of a single seed at the point of hairs emanating from the seed.  I tried to emphasize this point with some special effects from Color Efex Pro.   Do you like? til Tomorrow MJ
