Watercolor Woods

watercolor woodsFriends, yesterday in Crex was a little disappointing cause all the flowers are drying and looking rather bedraggled.  So I experimented with dragging the camera with a slow shutter speed. Then in post processing, used a watercolor filter in photoshop to add some interest.  Did I succeed, do you like?? til Tomorrow MJ

Superior Blue

superior blueFriends, Lake Superior with the fog rolling out in the morning.  Walking on the breakwater wall I like the little rocky spit sticking out into the water.  Kind of a telephoto abstract, do you like this lack of content??, not sure that i do til Tomorrow MJ

Sandpiper Unknown to me

sandpipers 3Friends, these three birds are probably a family but i don’t know the sandpipers and have to rely on those experienced birders to help me out.  Do you know what sandpiper this is (or plover)??I would appreciate any info you can contribute.  These were on Dike 5 in Crex on Friday.  til Tomorrow MJ

Abstracts

Friends, Ed Kneply of Photography Improvement Blog has issued a challenge to do six abstracts, three outdoors and three indoors, one each of macro, wide angle and telephoto viewpoints.  Objects should not be recognizable and line, shapes, and textures to be the main emphasis. How did I do on these abstracts of outdoor only?   The pink is a macro, the green ring is a wide-angle and the ore dock is a telephoto.  til Tomorrow MJ

Making Waves

ducks on superiorFriends, these mallard chicks are making their own waves following their mother on the green hues of Lake Superior. They are still covered with down and have no flight feathers yet, hope they grow in soon so they can fly south with their mother.  Until then they will be making waves. til Tomorrow MJ

Yesterday in Two Harbors

ore docks two harborsFriends, yesterday I saw this barge/ tugboat combo aligned with the ore dock in Two Harbors Minnesota.  This combination, an ATB or articulated tug barge, was recently built (2012) and is 875 feet long.  Her name is Lakes Contender/Ken  Boothe Sr.  Could not resist trying a panorama of this scene, I love all the little details from this 3 photo pan. This small port loads iron ore and other commodities and is north of Duluth on Lake Superior. til Tomorrow MJ

Annoyed or Angry

older cooperFriends, this mature Cooper Hawk was captured and banded last fall at Hawk Ridge in Duluth Minnesota.  He looks angry but his hackles are raised cause he is a little annoyed with being restrained while the educators talk about his natural history.  Someone will have a chance to adopt him and release him back into the wild.  I think this is my favorite photo from last fall at Hawk Ridge. A Rare Butterfly?

monarch1Friends, normally you find monarch butterflies all over the Northwestern corner of Wisconsin, but this year they have been  scarce  in Crex.  So i took a little trip south to Fish Lake Refuge on Thursday and in my wanderings, was able to find eight of these on the abundant blazing star flowers.  Maybe the second hatch has been successful or my friend, Agogo is releasing a sustaining population.  I like the little slash of orange contributed by the backlight on this particular butterfly.  Not sure that i like the color scheme, pink and orange, but i like the bokeh. til Tomorrow MJ

Bittern Eye

bittern eyeFriends, I was thrilled to find this bittern only feet outside my vehicle blind.  Most of the time, the grasses were interfering with my desired shot, but when i got home and perused my images, this one caught my eye, because of the bird eye.  Nice and sharp with his environment totally surrounding him.  This bird is always hiding in the grasses. til Tomorrow MJ
