Day Three Nature Challenge

Great Gray in the Snow
Dear Friends, this great gray owl is from my archive, the same owl as yesterday’s post, taken after he landed ten feet away and asked for a mouse, but i have no mice so off he went after giving me a few frames of pleasure, i sure love the owls, til Tomorrow MJ
Great Gray in Flight
Dear Friends, this photo is the first of the nature Challenge issued by Melissa Anderson, from my archive but hope to see some this winter, this owl flew right at me and landed in the snow about ten feet from me, i think he thought i had a mouse for him, but nothing in my pockets, til Tomorrow MJ
Mourning Summer
Dear Friends, i am in mourning, i love summer and all the colors that our warm weather brings, now the fall is gone, winter and the blues of ice and snow are pending. Christmas is coming so i am momentarily distracted by family activities and all that is good, but when the cold sets in and the temps reach the minus range, i hate going outside, but i force myself and bundle up my body to fight the cold, i can stay out until my camera freezes, then i am out of luck, so til Tomorrow MJ
Working Again
Dear Friends, this ten-petal mentzelia is growing out of the red rock in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, locally the red rock is called scoria, but the real term is porcelainite (sp) , made from clay layers being baked by a burning coal layer, if you drop a piece on a hard surface it will ring like a china cup, hence another local name, clinker. the white flower of the mentzelia is only present in late summer near sundown and before sunrise. til Tomorrow MJ
Teaching the Dance
Dear Friends, this image is a composite of two images, but typical of dancing cranes, i love it when they dance in the fall, you can see in the top bird a small piece of corn in the beak being offered to the ground bird, sometimes they will toss a small piece of ground clutter into the air as they jump, i don’t have that image yet which is why i keep trying, a fascinating ritual, sometimes the youngsters will imitate the adults, so teaching the dance til Tomorrow MJ
Crane Dance
Dear Friends, these cranes are jumping for joy or are they jumping to stay warm, either way, they appear happy, on a sunny morning in the corn field with light shining through their wing feathers. Are you jumping for joy this morning? I haven’t had enough coffee yet. Soon til Tomorrow MJ
My Best Dancing Cranes
Dear Friends, this is my best dancing cranes from this year, the fluffed up feathers make this image unique, this is a staring match , and the first bird to blink, well, that is my take, til Tomorrow MJ
The Essence
Dear Friends, the essence of fall in our part of the world is summarized in this image, the trees are brilliant with color, the corn is harvested and the cranes are flying everywhere. Soon the ground will be white, the cranes will be gone and the trees will be bare, i do not like the winter, but will put up with it, bah humbug, til Tomorrow MJ
Trumpeter Swan Takeoff
Friends, Crex Meadows in the fall not only has thousands of Sandhill Cranes, but also has smaller gatherings of Trumpeter Swans. The swans breed and raise their cygnets in the area and residents can be observed throughout the summer. So enjoy this landing til Tomorrow MJ
