Yellow Rumped Warbler

yellow rump warbler

Friends, this little warbler (yellow-rump) is showing off his three patches of yellow feathers, one on each side of his chest, one  on top of his head and one on his rump.  There were hundreds of yellow-rumps in Crex Meadows this spring, but now that it has turned to summer (85 degrees F) they have gone further north.  til Tomorrow MJ

Nashville Warbler

Nashville Warbler

Friends, sorry for the lousy background but this was the only decent shot of this Nashville Warbler as it passed through Crex Meadows this week, now the mosquitos have hatched making a photographer’s life unbearable.  But a great picture is worth all the suffering, so think of me sitting in the marshlands waiting for nature to reveal herself to me.     til Tomorrow MJ

Tennessee Warbler

Tennessee Warbler

Friends, this friendly Tennessee Warbler is looking right at me, but being a brave bird, he let me take his picture before he flitted off into the brush.  I like that the green leaves are popping showing that it is finally spring here in the northland. til Tomorrow MJ

Yellow Warbler

yellow warbler lunch

Friends, this Yellow Warbler has a beak full of flying insects for his lunch.  I think that they provide a great service by removing some of our insect population.  I can’t imagine how many insects there might be without our warbler invasion every spring. til Tomorrow MJ

Wilson Warbler

wilsons warbler

Friends, this Wilson Warbler is known for his black cap and is hiding in the brush, The bokeh is not good but wanted to share with WordPress friends.  I have been  busy this spring chasing the migration, first the ducks, then the dancing sharptail grouse and now the tiny little warblers.  Wild life photography is work, and if you don’t love it, you wont do it.  Yesterday started at 3am and a sunrise visit to Namekagon Barrens to shoot the Sharptail Grouse, then onto Crex for midmorning and afternoon,  Finally home at 5PM, supper, but when the feathers grow sharp in my viewfinder and the light is just right, my clock is ticking til Tomorrow MJ

Dancing of the Grouse

grouse dance

Friends, a ballet dancer, nope, a male sharptail grouse on the attack.  The image below shows the more typical dance position, but when two males come head to head, there is a lot of bluffing, then one or both birds may rise up and try to spur the other bird.  When the female appeared on the grounds, there was only horizontal dancing and no more spurring.. til Tomorrow MJ

The above image is probably a male, with his head stripe of yellow and yellow shoulders.  Spring is truly here and it is raining again today (sigh) til Tomorrow MJ0505mjs

Horned Grebe

Friends, this is a friendly horned grebe on Phantom Lake, the afternoon light was just right for a closeup portrait.  Those yellow feathers on each side of her head are the “horns”.  I don’t always get this close but he didn’t mind my vehicle.  til Tomorrow MJ
