Eagle Has Flown

Friends, I have been visiting the Bald Eagle nest in Crex Meadows since April, today the chick was twenty feet down from the nest and when i was taking his portrait he decided to fly away.  Straight down the waterway and away from my camera.   I know it is not the best shot but it is a documentary shot to mark his freedom from the nest.  He was getting pretty bored up there and needs to learn to hunt for himself.  He was sitting on this branch and checking out the activity in the water below. Won’t be long before he is bringing home his own bacon. til Tomorrow MJ

Mature Bald Eagle

Friends, this mature Bald Eagle is staring down at me, Against the clear blue skies that we get sometimes in the early spring, he is a regal image.  I had to work hard at getting the exposure right as his white feathers often overexpose and the details are lost.  I had no blinkies in this image so the exposure must be right, Is there right and wrong in art? A question of taste, but technically must be right.  The scientist in me must be satisfied and also the artist, both sides of me are satisfied by this image.  til Tomorrow MJ

Bald Eagle Chick

Friends, this eagle chick is about two months old and ready to fly away, but today he is back in his safe house waiting for breakfast.  This nest is along a road but high in a tree, so lots of telephoto was needed to reach him. His beak is gray with little hints of the golden color that will predominate when he is an adult.  When we visited the nest yesterday, no eagles were seen, but when we pulled up to look closely, he rose up from the bottom of the nest where he had been napping.  til Tomorrow MJ

Ready to Fly, but not today

Friends, this is a Bald Eagle chick that is about ready to fly from his perch.  When i arrived at the nest where i have been following the progress of this chick, he had worked his way out of the nest and was perched about six feet above the nest on a small branch that is sagging a bit under his weight.  He was talking frequently and his mother was sitting in an adjacent tree watching silently.  He seemed ready to fly, but maybe not today. til Tomorrow MJ

Bald Eagle Portrait

Friends, this a mature Bald Eagle with her chick of this year are sitting on the nest. I have been following the chick progress since about early May, now the chick is getting ready to fly.  When both adults are on the nest with the chick, there is peace and harmony, but when the adults leave him alone, the chick jumps around the nest and spreads his wings to make them strong.  The bottom image is a composite showing that he is getting lift  from his powerful wings, soon he will take flight, maybe today, since the wind has diminished from the 40 mph gusts of the last two days.  til Tomorrow MJ

Do not disturb-Bald eagle dinner

Friends, this time of year we see lots of bald eagles along the road, usually perched on a road-killed deer or in a tree alongside the road overlooking roadkill.  They prefer fish but most of the water is still frozen and fishing is not an option.  When they have found unfrozen dinner, they are reluctant to leave and are “sitting ducks” for the nature photographer.  This one gave me the “eye” and i took his picture from across the road.  til Tomorrow MJ
